Discipline first became something to talk about this spring. We were living in a 1 bedroom hotel room and Cooper started to really push our buttons. He had had just had his 2nd birthday.
Didn’t cross our mind that a 2 year old might not like living in s hotel room either.
We sat one night watching Supernanny and taking notes. Pretty much the only things I remember are, you have to have a naughty chair, use the term “unacceptable behavior” as frequently as possible and say everything in a British accent.
Come to find out all Coop wanted was to get out of that hotel. Too bad we had already gone to British extremes to make him love sleeping in a pack-n-play and eating continental breakfast.
One thing I learned through it all, is it doesn’t hurt to have a discipline alter ego. I’m confident that I’ve just solved the fears we parents have of our children being mad at us for punishment.
I am now British when I discipline.
{And look much like this}
Forget about the people that look at you like you’re a freak in a restaurant. Forget about the people that have a real accent who look down on you for mocking them.
It freaking works. Just do it.
Now say it with me. “Unasseptable behaaaviour”
(In your best Jo Frost, of course.)
Is it sad that I actually tried saying it in a British accent?! 🙂
Hahahah love this! I keep thinking I should watch Super Nanny for tips! Ill try the British thing!
I am going to work on the British accent part. Blake clearly does not take me seriously in my regular tone…maybe this will work 🙂 lol!!!
super nanny is da bomb! i love to watch that show. and the parents on there are usually so spineless! although i know consistency can be oh so not fun 🙂
I already have an accent as it is, and faking a British accent will certainly make me look quite dumb. If i make my own accent thicker than it already is, it works wonders too.
Sometimes with the ladies. : )
Ohh… SuperNanny.. you get it girl!
Ha! Best parenting advice I've heard in a long time.
Girl, I know the pain of being confined to a hotel room. We lived in one for THREE freaking months after our return from the Philippines before finding a house we loved. Good God, the three of us wanted to kill each other too! It's a shame I didn't bust out with the British accent though…thinking that might have made a difference, ha ha!
I totally tried saying it in a British accent. HAHA! Well good to know 🙂
Oh i love this post! When I discipline my husband, I take on an accent too! I will have to use this on my baby boy!!!
My husband is British and when Obi plays in the plant he yells "get out of the plahhhhnt!" Add that to your repertoire 🙂
This cracks me up! I love watching that show and taking notes (and I don't even have kids!). I am glad that you found something works, accent or not! 🙂
