I’ve been all over the board with fitness in the last few years, in terms of what I really enjoy doing. I’ve been pretty consistent, but am always making adjustments according to the place I am in life and with our schedule. Some seasons, it’s easier to find a schedule, some, I’m barely getting a shower in and I have to prioritize my daily events. I do know that I’m an overall better human when I am consistent with my workouts. My head is clearer, I eat healthier, I have more energy and I’m overall happier.
I’ve been pregnant 3 times, gained at least 40 lbs with each one, battled hyper and hypothyroidism and had my weight fluctuate all over the place. Finding consistency is difficult, especially as we have babies, age and deal with our wild and crazy hormones. The most commonly asked questions I get are around my workouts and how I stay in shape. Here are some of my best tips for you, as well as what I’m doing right now.
What is my motivation?
I get this question a ton and honestly, the answer changes! Right now? I want to feel comfortable in my bathing suit for Spring break! But long term, I need to be healthy for my family. I want to keep up with my kids. I need to keep my back muscles strong to support the titanium rods I have in. I really like to eat. 🙂 Here are things that I recommend if you’re looking to find consistency in your workouts:
Do what works for you
There isn’t a set thing that works forever. Be fluid and open to different things in different seasons. Don’t give up if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing. Just try something different. Working out and being healthy is first and foremost for you. For your body, your mental health and your life.
Find a balance
2 years ago, I was arguably in the best shape of my life. (Before and after below) I had done 2 Whole30 rounds, I went to the gym to cycle or do body pump at 4am 3 times a week and was insanely picky about everything I ate. The physical results were great. Mentally and emotionally, not so much. I was exhausted, unhappy and putting extreme strictness above really enjoying life. I might be a little fluffier now than I was then, but I’m overall much happier. Lifestyle changes need to be sustainable and not something that becomes the most important factor in your life.
Current Workout Schedule
As of right now, my workout schedule is 5-6 days a week and I’m doing all things that I absolutely enjoy. I schedule out the ones away from home first, then fill in with the ones I can do quickly at home. I don’t have any fool proof guide, but as I ebb and flow with my workouts, I’m happy to fill you in on what is happening in my life.
Running: 1-2 days a week
I’ve loved running since I trained for my first half marathon back in 2012. I haven’t trained for anything huge lately, but I’m really enjoying running some local 5ks and 2-3 miles on the treadmill here. So many people have asked me how to enjoy running. My biggest tip, is to watch Netflix! I get into my series and run more because I want to finish it! If I run outside, it’s all about good music to keep you going.
Beachbody On Demand: 2 days a week
I love the 100 Morning Meltdown program. I’ve done 40 days now, spread over the last 3 months. The workouts are about 30 minutes with a great mix of cardio, weights and stretching. If you see me working out early morning, this is probably what I’m doing.
Club Pilates: 1 day a week
I absolutely love going here! I typically take the level 2 classes, which are 50 minutes of booty kicking work, without the impact. I have found that I really like how my body responds to these workouts and it keeps my lower back stretched out. If you have a Club Pilates close to you, I highly recommend it!
Hot Yoga: 1 day a week
I’ve just recently started this, but some friends got me going with them and I’m so grateful. I cried my first class because not only was it amazing for my body, but the stress relief, deep breathing and focus on my mental well being was incredible. I love feeling long and lean when I leave, plus it’s a really good way to clean out those pores!
I honestly feel that when I take this time for myself, I’m a better wife and mom. But I’m not about to give myself a hard time when life gets busy and seasons change. I hope that sharing this just encourages you to find what works for you, to make time for yourself and to strive to fill your cup so that you can fill the cups of those in your family!
