As I gear up to have baby #3, I know there will be many days and even several weeks that I don’t do anything more than sit in the pick-up line. Recovery from a c-section takes a good bit of time and I can tell you from experience that rushing the healing is in no way a good idea.
That said, I think it’s so important for us moms, right after delivery or not, to keep ourselves as well put together as possible. No, this doesn’t mean full makeup, stilettos and a hour long Pinterest hair-do tutorial. For me, there are several steps that I like to take so I don’t get bogged down and gloomy. I’d like to think my husband appreciates these little steps, instead of coming home to a PJ-clad wife, too!
Get dressed. I don’t wear the outfits I showcase here on the blog on a daily basis. There are about 3-4 days a week, 2 being on the weekend, that I feel dressed up and really put together. But I do have several pieces that I feel good in the house in. Try swapping your baggy yoga pants for a fitted, cropped pair and wear them with a bright tank instead of a baggy t-shirt. I also love to wear cotton dresses right now, short or maxi. One piece is easy to throw on, comfortable and looks very put together.
Put on mascara and lip gloss. I don’t wear “face makeup” on a regular basis, but it would be hard to find me without mascara and some lip gloss. That extra minute in the morning will make a big difference in your face for the day.
Go for a walk. Nothing makes you feel better than a walk. Slow, fast or a full on run, it’s all good for your body and your spirits. Even more, getting those wild kiddos out of the house is always a good idea!
Brush your teeth. So, confession time. I have a really hard time brushing my teeth in the morning. I have a terrible gag reflex and it seems really bad first thing in the morning. ARM & HAMMER™ Truly Radiant™ Whitening & Strengthening Rinse has no alcohol, but freshens my breath, whitens my teeth and doesn’t make me gag. I’ve decided that the best time for me to brush is right after my first cup of coffee, which also prevents me from drinking too much caffeine. I’ve been using the ARM & HAMMER™ Truly Radiant™ Manual Toothbrush with the ARM & HAMMER™ Truly Radiant™ Rejuvenating Toothpaste. The toothbrush is the first manual brush with a rotating head, which helps get in-between teeth to knock out plaque. The toothpaste helps repair enamel, but also whiten my teeth.
Feed yourself. I am super guilty of eating leftovers off my kids’ plates. It’s too easy for a tired mom! But, if I take some extra time on the weekends to chop veggies and stock the fridge with quick and healthy options, I feel so much better. I keep protein bars and trail mix packets in the pantry for times where it really is just too crazy to make myself a meal. It’s still more nutritious than the crust off a PB&J.
Drink water. I used to be so awful about sipping on coffee all morning and not even thinking about water until lunch time. No more! Now, I try to drink a gallon a day. It’s amazing the difference I can see in my skin when I drink what I should and alternatively, when I don’t get there. And don’t worry, you’ll only have to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes until your body gets used to it!

I try to keep myself together by planning ahead as much as I can. We have a family calendar and I make lots of lists. I try to grocery shop at least 2 days ahead and pack lunches and pick out clothes and stuff the night before. I drink a lot of water, take a lot of peaceful walks with my dog and breathe deeply. Preparation, peace and faith.

My tip for keeping yourself looking put together is to dress for your shape and in the shades that suit you best. I'm a tall, curvy woman, and I've learned, for example, that turtlenecks are taboo for me but V-necks and scoop necks are my best friends. And if you always get compliments when you wear a certain color, wear more of it!
I make sure that I have time to myself at the end of the day.

I think it is critical to get enough sleep – or as close to 8 hours as possible, even if you have to add naps in there!
As a caregiver I can get frazzled. Enough sleep, reasonable nutrition and taking a deep breath of fresh air help.

Well, I don't have kids but I think the #1 thing most parents need to do is remember who they were BEFORE the kids and feed that person's spirit just as much as you feed the parent. It is important for you and for your kids to see you as a complete person, not just a parent.
