I haven’t been in my car very much in the last 7 weeks. Isn’t it a strange feeling to leave the house these days? We’re all being extremely cautious with hand washing, cleaning surfaces of our home, not touching door handles in public, taking precautions with the packages we get delivered and so much more. But what about our cars?
The challenges we face today have given way to a lot of creativity and simple entertainment. We recently packed the boys up for a tailgate picnic near our local lake. It was an easy thing to throw together, something totally different than we’d been doing day to day and was so much fun. This time at home has made us realize so much more how important these moments can be. We can choose to be positive and help our kids look for the good!
Since our car is one of the few places we can “go” right now, it’s so important to keep it clean! This really hit me after a grocery store run, when I was cleaning all the groceries as I took them out of the trunk. We want to make our car a clean and safe place for our family to be able to take a drive without worrying about germs lingering from the last essential trip out. Autotrader has helpful articles about disinfecting your car during the Coronavirus pandemic and can answer questions for car owners during this uncertain time.
Here are the steps that we are taking, after an essential errand, to make sure our car stays as clean as possible:
- Use hand sanitizer before entering your car from a store, work, etc.
- Wipe down any surfaces you touch with a disinfectant wipe – the steering wheel, seatbelt, seat, door handle, dashboard controls.
- Spray a cleaner in the fabric trunk space or wherever groceries were sitting.
This is also a great time to do some general Spring cleaning in your car. PS. This is a great chore for older kids who are looking for something to do!
- Clean out unnecessary items/trash.
- Vacuum the interior.
- Wash the exterior. (you would think our kids were riding a roller coaster through the drive-thru car wash!)
- Restock your first aid kit, backup snacks and other essentials you keep in your car.
- Clean out carseats.
